A screw-threading implement includes threading members 21, each freely mounted on a shaft 23 having an eccentric portion 22, the shaft being rotated during threading to shift the member radially so that a tapered thread is produced on a workpiece. The shafts are provided with pinions 25 which mesh with a common gear 26 splined to a sleeve 30. Relative rotation between the sleeve and the shank 12 of the head thus produces rotation of the shafts. A transverse pin 42 extends through an elongated slot in the sleeve and includes, a cam follower section 49 which slides on a cam surface 45 (Fig. 3) positioned in the shank 12. The cam surface is in the form of an insert in the shank and can be substituted by a replacement insert with any suitable cam profile. During rolling, by means of rolls 21, a workpiece 53 together with the sleeve 30, move axially relative to the head causing the follower section 49 to slide over the cam surface, a spiral spring 34 urging the parts into contact. When the follower section reaches the end 47 of the cam surface the spring is free to rotate the pin 42 (so that a roller 69 on the end of the pin occupies the position 69a) in order to release the rolls from the workpiece. The roller 69, which cooperates with an aperture 65 in an annulus 60, permits the rolls to be reset to their initial position by means of a longitudinally movable yoke 63. A workpiece support 52 is screwed into a main mandrel 51, the relatives adjustment of these parts determining the point at which the rolls are released from the workpiece. The rolls may have annular threads and be skewed, or they may have helical threads. The head may be rotated relative to a workpiece or held stationary, and either the head or the workpiece can be fed longitudinally. |
