A communication system comprises a data communication network 10, service providers 12, 14, 16 and communication terminals 20, 22, 24. The communication terminals 20, 22, 24 include a processor, a user interaction means and a character 30, 32, 34 stored in memory that runs on the processor and provides a presence on the user interaction means. The character 30, 32, 34 may be a customisable program or may indicate preferences or instructions of the user for data reception. The communication system also comprises agents 40, 42 residing in the communication network 10 that collect data from the service providers 12, 14, 16 and provide data to the characters 30, 32, 34 over a wireless link supported by the communication terminals 20, 22, 24. The data received by the characters 30, 32, 34 are presented to users of the communication terminals 20, 22, 24 by the user interaction means.
