1,244,199. Determination of settlement rate. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 18 Oct., 1968 [24 Oct., 1967], No. 49496/68. Heading B1X. The rate of settlement of suspended matter in a liquid is determined automatically and periodically by a method comprising periodically (a) introducing part of a suspension from reactor 1 into a measurement cell 4 through pipes 7 and 2, (b) stirring the suspension in cell 4 by means 14, 13, (c) terminating introduction of suspension into cell 4 when the suspension reaches a predetermined level in the cell, for example the level of sensing electrode 15, (d) terminating agitation of the suspension and (e) measuring the time for the settling face to move from an upper level (which may be the predetermined level above) to a lower level. The settling face may be detected optically, for example using projector 17, photoelectric cell 18 system(s). Signals from electrode 15 and photoelectric cell 18 are fed to control unit 21 which operates valves 3 and 6 for introduction of suspension into cell 4 and discharge of cell 4 after measurement, chronometer 19 for measurement of settling time, which may be recorded at 20, and warning device 31, which is operated if the settling time measurements fall outside prescribed limits. Unit 21 may also operate means for adjusting inflow of reactants into reactor 1 or controlling pH or temperature in reactor 1 to maintain the settling rate of the suspension within these limits.
|
