Braking system in a turbocharger

The turbocharger (1) has a rotor with a compressor (21) and a turbine (4) held in bearings in a housing (2,3,6). The external drum brake for the turbocharger rotor has an outward-facing cylindrical surface (G) attached to the backplate (15) of the compressor rotor or turbine rotor. A brake ring (14) with an inward facing friction face (B) may be mounted in the compressor housing. If the rotor overspeeds, the drum may expand to engage the brake.
