A linear actuator comprises a non-rotatable shaft 11 which is given a stepped axial motion in the direction of the arrow A on rotation of an input shaft 19 by mechanism comprising a first nut 12, a second nut 13, a fixed housing abutment 15 and a movable abutment 14 which is reciprocated axially by rollers 21 engaging a face cam 17. The nuts 12, 13 are interconnected by a spring 23, and abutment 14 is prevented from rotating by means of a splined connection with the housing 10. A cage 21a for rollers 21 is driven from input shaft 19, through a gear 22, at half the speed at which cam 17 is driven from the shaft 19, through a gear 18. A pinion 24, coupled to shaft 19 by a spring 25, meshes a toothed periphery of nut 12. Springs 26 force the movable abutment 14 in the direction of the cam 17. On rotation of input shaft 19, cam 17 is rotated and causes axial movement, in the direction of arrow A, of abutment 14, first nut 12 and output shaft 11. Spring 23 causes nut 13 to screw along the shaft 11 and maintain contact with the fixed abutment 15. On completion of the movement, the load is carried by nut 13, and pinion 24 is rotated by spring 25 to cause rotation of first nut 12 and return it to its original position engaging movable abutment 14, which has been returned to its initial position by the springs 26. |
