The metal sealing rings for a plunger 14 of a compressor or pump are each of predetermined size and modulus of elasticity such that the fluid pressure acts to elastically reduce the clearance between the ring and plunger by a predetermined amount, the initial clearance at the first ring 16 being different from that at the other rings 17, 18, 19 when the fluid pressure is absent. The rings may be made of tungsten carbide or aluminium oxide. In the embodiment shown, the first ring 16 is provided with a greater initial clearance to allow it to fluctuate during operation. In another embodiment, three rings are housed in the same groove and have stepped clearances such that the first ring has the smallest clearance and the greatest radial thickness.
