PURPOSE: A caption character-based image indexing method is provided to search speedily and easily a desired image by using a caption character. CONSTITUTION: When there is a part that a gray level is changed steeply within a constant region of a caption anticipation block, a control member discriminates that there is the caption within the caption anticipation block(S100). When it is confirmed that the caption region is within the caption anticipation block, the caption is detected through a character separator from the corresponding caption anticipation block and the caption character included within the detected caption is separated(S200). A character recognition relating to the shape of the separated caption character is performed through a character recognizing device(S300). Indexing numbers are allocated to the caption characters processed by the character recognition, the corresponding image frames having the separated caption character are matched with the indexing numbers and the matched result is stored to a database within a digital image processing device(S400).
