The steps (13) of the escalator run on wheels (11) on support rails (10). The rails have running surfaces (10.1,10.2) at different levels to accommodate escalator wheels and drive chain wheels. A central guide rail (16) may be gripped by clasp brakes (17.4) to stop the escalator. The guide rail carries the primary element (14.1) for the linear motor (14). The primary element incorporates packets of metal laminae surrounded by electrical windings. There is a small air gap (14.3) between the primary element and the secondary elements (14.2) which consist of permanent magnets fastened (15) to the motorized steps. |
