In a papermaking process a wet web (1) of coated paper or carton moves over a series of transverse box-shaped beams (3) with transverse air (7) outlets (3b) forming an air cushion (6) between the web and beams. The beam group (2) forms an arched array. An air suction outlet (4) is located between adjacent beams. also claimed is a commensurate paper/carton drying assembly in which the width (BD) of each beam (3) to the width (BS) of the suction gap (4) is: 2 BD/BS 50. The jet aperture (3b) is at an angle of 30 to 60 to the centre of the beam (3). Air emerges from the jet at 80 m/s and up to 450C. The jets are of any suitable shape.
