1345030 Preparation of metal aminophenates and lubricating compositions containing them CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 19 April 1971 [25 March 1970] 25316/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Metal phenates are obtained by condensing in an inert alcoholic medium a C 8-35 alkylated phenol with from 1 to 4 mols. of C 1-5 primary amine and from 2 to 3À5 mols. of formaldehyde per mol. of said alkylated phenol to form an intermediate condensation product and water followed by a neutralization reaction between said intermediate and from 1 to 1À2 mols. per mol. of said intermediate of an oxide or hydroxide of Ca or Ba, and mixtures thereof to form said metal phenate and water, the condensation being carried out at a temperature of from 250‹ to 400‹ F. and at a pressure of from 20 to 300 p.s.i.g. for a period of 0À5 to 7 hours; (2) stripping said inert medium and said water from the condensation product prior to the reaction with the oxide or hydroxide; (3) conducting said neutralization reaction in the presence of a glycol, or a reactive functional derivative thereof, at a temperature of from 220‹ to 360‹ F. and (a) stripping the water of reaction and said glycol or derivative thereof, from said metal phenate product. The invention also comprises a lubricating composition comprising a lubricating oil, e.g. a mineral lubricating oil obtained from paraffinic, naphthenic, asphaltic or mixed base crudes and/or mixtures thereof, containing a metal phenate according to the present invention. |
