Aqs. dispersions of vinylidene chloride (vdc) polymers are produced by polymerising vdc with relatively small amount of other monomers in aqs. emulsion, using usual catalysts and dispersants and under familiar conditions, with addition of small amount of 4-10C alcohols, such as 4-8C, esp. 4-6C n-alanols, but-1-yn-3-ol, but-2-ym-1-ol, isoamyl alcohol and cyclohexanol. Amount of alcohol added gen is 0.1-6, pref. 0.5-2 wt.%, referred to monomers. These dispersions are useful for coating paper and plastics films esp. polylefins, polyesters, polyamides etc. They have lower surface tension, lower tendency to coagulate, lower viscosity and much higher stability than usual. Alcohol is not detrimental to properties of film.
|
