Improved method for thickening oils, wherein crystallisable alkene polymer particles (1-20%), (e.g. propene homopolymers, propene block copolymers contng. up to 25% ethene, propene copolymers with up to 13% ethene or ethene copolymers with 5-13% propene), of size 0.02-0.5 mu (and at least 75% between 0.2 and 0.4 mu), are dispersed in mineral oil by stirring, and opt. with heating above 60 deg., pref. 130-170 deg., followed by cooling, to give a stable gel with a high modulus. The exact properties of the gel depend on the compn. and on the mode of cooling. The polymer particles are prepd. by polymerisation of the alpha-alkene(s) in the presence of TiCl3-Al alkyl, pref. at 30-80 deg. and opt. at pressures > 5.3 kg./cm2, in a solvent. Prepn. of ointments, gelled fuels and films of fluids.
|
