Paper currency is oriented in skew and transverse alignment to accomplish deskewing and centering. The deskewing and centering device (84) includes a shuttle (204). The shuttle includes pinch wheels (212 and 214) and sensors (216, 218 and 220) that are positioned in the direction transverse to the path of the currency. The rotation of the pinch wheels is selectively controlled to orient the leading edges of the currency perpendicular to the path of the currency. After the currency is properly oriented it is released.
