PURPOSE: An apparatus for detecting position of a moving object in a navigation system and its method are provided to detect the position of the moving object accurately using a detection signal of sensors. CONSTITUTION: According to the apparatus for detecting position of a moving object in a navigation system, a map data storing unit(208) stores digital map data. A sensor unit(210) detects travelling direction and travelling distance of the moving object. A main control unit(212) judges reliability of position information from a GPS receiver(204), and sets position information estimated with a signal of the sensor unit as reference position information, and detects the position of the moving object, and controls to display digital map data and the position of the moving object after map-matching the position of the moving object to the digital map data. And a display driver unit(214) displays the digital map data and the position of the moving object on a display unit(216).
