In one aspect, a refractory wall structure includes an array of tubular members (100) and intervening refractory material (102) arranged so that the tubular members protrude from a nominal internal wall surface (103) defined by the refractory material by a distance smaller than the diameter of the tubular members. In another aspect, a solid fuel gasifier includes first wall structure (12) defining a gasification chamber (14), and generally curved wall structure (16) defining a combustion chamber (17), which operates as a cycloburner and where gas combustion takes place. Slot port means (19) is arranged for admitting a flow of hot combustible gases from the gasification chamber to the combustion chamber. Moveable control damper means (40) is mounted for controlling the flow of hot gases through the port means whereby to manage the respective combustion profiles in the chambers
