Chain mail apparel that includes a portion, which in use, is located to cover and protect a joint of the user whilst wearing the apparel. The apparel portion includes a first area that is required to extend and a second area that is required to compress, accomplished by the first area having more links per unit than the second area. This accommodates flexion between the parts of the anatomical structure of the user joined by the joint.
