The method involves finding a consigned engine torque to be supplied by the engine for moving a vehicle on a slope. An effective torque supplied by the engine under an action of a gas control unit is estimated. The effective torque is increased up to a level of the consigned torque when a drivers behavior is detected and when the effective torque is less than the consigned torque. An independent claim is also included for a device for assisting starting of a motor vehicle that is stopped on a slope surface.
