A method (M1) for working up the crude product from the oligomerisation of ethylene involves treatment with compound(s) (I) containing at least one amine function and/or alcohol function and/or acid function. Independent claims are also included for (1) a method (M2) for the production of light alpha -olefins by the oligomerisation of ethylene followed by treatment of the crude product as above (2) a method (M3) for the production of hex-1-ene by trimerisation of ethylene followed by treatment of the crude product as above.
