PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect the speed of rotational driving by improving the durability of an endless belt which has a speed detection pattern. SOLUTION: In a fixing device which presses a fixing belt heated and at a high temperature against a recording sheet carrying a toner image to fix the toner image on a recording sheet, the fixing belt is provided with a speed detection pattern and the speed of the fixing belt is detected by detecting light with which the fixing belt is irradiated and its reflected light. The speed detection pattern 21e is formed on a base body layer 21a of the fixing belt 21, a conductive layer 21b which is heated by electromagnetic induction, and an elastic layer 21c, and covered with a surface peeling layer 21d. In an image forming apparatus in which a toner image is temporarily transferred onto the intermediate transfer belt, heated and fused on the belt and pressed onto a recording sheet, an intermediate transfer belt is provided with a similar speed detection pattern and the belt speed is thereby detected by a speed sensor and can be controlled.
