PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide organic group-containing silica gel containing a desired organic group in high concentration, exhibiting a sharp fine pore distribution, having excellent thermal resistance, water resistance, physical stability or the like and produced with high productivity. SOLUTION: The organic group-containing silica gel is characterized in that (a) the fine pore volume is 0.5-1.6 mL/g, (b) the specific surface area is 300-1,000 m<SP>2</SP>/g, (c) the mode diameter (Dmax) of the fine pore is <20 nm, (d) the total volume of fine pores having diameter in the range of Dmax±20% is≥40% of the total volume of all fine pores, (e) the silica gel is amorphous and (f) the ratio of silicon atom directly coupled to carbon atom in total silicon atoms is≥0.1 %.
