Diverter apparatus (1) is positioned beside belt conveyor (50) and comprises diversion member (2) in the form of a straight horizontal bar which is centrally pivoted so as to define two oppositely directed arms. On sensing article (52) requiring diversion, a drive means is activated to rotate diversion member (2) from the position shown 180° in direction (60) and thereby push article (52) transversely off conveyor (50) and onto conveyor (56). The opposite arm of diversion member (2) is then in position to engage next article (52) to be diverted.
