PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus capable of carrying out ordinary photographing, reading a data symbol and also preventing out of focus in advance by providing a notice means for notifying a user of an out of focus warning. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus has an ordinary photographing mode wherein ordinary photographing is carried out and a data symbol read mode wherein a data symbol 38 is read, and is ordinarily set to the ordinary photographing mode. In photographing, the imaging apparatus detects a distance up to an object and a display section 13 displays an out of focus warning and a data symbol read mode selection menu when the detected distance up to the object is a distance (a distance set for reading the data symbol 38) suitable for reading the data symbol 38.
