A two-dimensional image forming apparatus comprises laser light sources (1a-1c), light diffusers (6a-6c) for diffusing light, an illumination optical system for irradiating the diffusers (6a-6c) with light from the laser light sources (1a-1c), diffuser oscillating sections (13a-13c) for oscillating the diffusers (6a-6c), and spatial light modulation elements (7a-7c) disposed in proximity to the diffusers (6a-6c) for modulating light from the laser light sources (1a-1c) diffused by the diffusers (6a-6c). The diffusers (6a-6c) are oscillated by the diffuser oscillating sections (13a-13c) at a speed satisfying a relation of V>dx30 (mm/sec), where d is the particle size of the diffusers and V is the oscillating speed of the diffusers (6a-6c). According to the arrangement, it is possible to effectively reduce speckle noise existing on an image projected onto a screen (11).
