[Also in Division B1] Polyester resin, which has been polymerized in a fluid heated reactor 10 e.g. at 575‹ F., is discharged by pressurized gas as a circular section stream from an orifice (46), Fig. 3 (not shown), of a slidable valve 12 either directly or, via an inclined stainless steel cross conveyer 104, on to a horizontal stainless steel conveyer 116 on which it is conveyed between the nip of a driven roll 118 and a non-driven roll 142 and rolled into a sheet 22. The valve (12), Fig. 3 (not shown), comprises a fluid heated plate (40) which is slidable by an air motor (58), between a position closing the outlet passage of the reactor 10, formed by a replaceable insert (38), and a position permitting discharge of the resin through a circular section plate opening (46) which is wider than the outlet passage and is outwardly tapered at the lower end thereof. In the closed position, the plate (40) is sealingly urged against a PTFE seal (66) by an adjustable bell crank (68) actuated by an air motor (74). The operation of the air motors (58, 74) is synchronized by a limit switch (82, 84) actuated solenoid system whereby the crank (68) is operable only in response to movement of the plate (40) into its closed position, and the plate (40) is movable out of its closed position only in response to disengagement of the crank (68) from the plate (40). The conveyers 16, 18 are cooled by water spray nozzles 112, 170, and the roll 118 by circulation of water, via the hollow shaft thereof. Adhesion of resin to the belts 104, 116 and roll 118 is prevented by directing a water spray e.g. from nozzles 110, located below the vortical apex of the surface travels thereof, to provide a surface film. Excess water on the surface of conveyer 18 is removed by an air blast directed from nozzles down on to the surface, against the run of the belt and in directions outwardly from the resin 14 thereon. The upper roll 118 is displaceable away from and towards the belt 116 by a pair of air motor operated lever systems e.g. 122, 136, the latter position being determinable against synchronously adjustable stops 141. Two pairs of conveyer assemblies 104 may simultaneously serve the conveyer 116. |
