<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type video display device capable of realizing the improvement of contrast, the reduction of power consumption and the restraint of the defect in black on a liquid crystal projector. <P>SOLUTION: A video signal processing circuit 23 inputs a video signal so as to perform processing such as frequency conversion, and performs processing to generate data showing the averaged brightness (APL: Average Picture Level) of a frame video in every frame period. A microcomputer 25 functions as a light control arithmetic block, receives APL data and performs processing to generate light control data, and also it functions as a lamp driver control block and performs processing to transmit a light control command to a lamp driver 26.
