PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a slit member contributing to size reduction and enhancement of resolution for an encoder.

SOLUTION: At least a portion with a large number of slit holes 153 formed in a metal sheet 151 is sealed with a translucent member 152. Sufficient mechanical strength is secured by the translucent member 152, even when the slit holes 153 are formed at fine array pitches in the thin metal sheet 151. Detection by a photosensor or the like is not disturbed because the the slit holes 153 in the metal sheet 151 is sealed with the translucent member 152. This contributes to the size reduction and the enhancement of resolution for an encoder device.
