PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce not only wrong extraction that extracts a non-head image region as a head image region but also errors which fail to extract the head image region in a head image region extraction device which extracts an elliptical head image region from an object image. SOLUTION: Reference patterns (B) and (C), which are not elliptical (A) but are obtained by reducing intensity in the vicinity of a contact point where an edge image makes contact with a tangental line perpendicular to an edge direction, are generated as a reference pattern. Then, the edge image extracted from the object image is scanned by using the reference patterns. By this, the wrong extraction, which erroneously extracts a region having large edge intensity due to the influence of a straight line as an elliptical region, can be reduced.
