PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable input setting of a character string in a simple operation using a limited number of keys. SOLUTION: Kana characters in the first to ninth rows of the Japanese syllabary, starting with A, KA, SA, TA, NA, HA, MA, YA and RA, are assigned respectively to numeric keys of 7, 8, 9, 4, 5, 6, 1, 2 and 3. The correspondences are stored in a setting key code table 17. When a control lock 12A on a keyboard 12 is operated to provide switching to a character setting mode, in response to continuous operations of the same numeric key, a CPU 11 refers to the setting key code table 17 to cyclically select the plurality of kana characters assigned to the numeric key, and sets a selected kana character as an input character.
