PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element and its driving method that reduce deterioration in display quality and a feeling of physical disorder that a user has during pen input operation. SOLUTION: When a normal image (an image other than an image by handwriting input) is displayed, reset driving and write driving are alternately performed as shown by t0 to t1 in Fig. (h). Consequently, an image with accurate gradations can be displayed. The displayed image is held in the memory (time t1 to t2), but only the write driving is carried out in handwriting input without performing the reset driving. When the reset driving is performed in the handwriting input, no display is made in an area (pixels) where the reset driving is performed, so lines, characters, etc., which are inputted may be partially broken, but the lines etc., are excellently displayed in this invention without being broken.
