PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image data compression and restoration (CODEC) method for a JBIG standard compression and restoration chip. SOLUTION: The image compression and restoration method is implemented by a first cycle for reading image data and converting a plurality of reference pixels around a pixel of a restoration target from a context (CX) format into a state (ST) format, a second cycle including the steps of: performing numerical arithmetic of the image data and utilizing ST for the numerical arithmetic in a collation table (LUT) to find an LSZ value; subtracting the LSZ value from a first default parameter to find a first subtracted value; subtracting the first default value from a second default parameter and adding the LSZ value to find a second subtracted value; and selecting a new first default parameter from the LSZ value to the first subtracted value and selecting a new second default parameter from the second default parameter to the second subtracted value, and a third cycle for renormalizing the new first default parameter and the new second default parameter and outputting processed image data.
