PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication apparatus, a control unit for an electric appliance, and an electric appliance which establish communication between the communication apparatus and the electric appliance at a high speed and, when a communication speed between the communication system and the electric appliance is unknown, establish the communication at a supplied communication speed between the two. SOLUTION: A communication control unit 3 transmits a confirmation message constituted by a specified bit stream to a home electric appliance control unit 2 at an acquired communication rate value, and enters a reception waiting state of a reply message from the home electric appliance control unit 2 for a specified period of time. When a bit stream to indicate the reply message is received within the specified period of time, the communication control unit 3 sets a value of a flag stored in a control information storage part 4 to "1" and establishes that the value of the communication rate at which the confirmation message has been sent is valid.
