PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading method and apparatus wherein the reading speed is improved regardless of rise of resolution in a subscanning direction when reading a monochromatic image. SOLUTION: When a document 11 is read as a monochromatic image and a distance between read positions in the subscanning direction of the document 11 is shorter than that between imaging lines, a subscanning means transfers a line sensor 30 by a read interval until a transfer distance of the line sensor 30 from a prescribed position gets equal to an interval of imaging lines, and the subscanning means transfers the line sensor 30 from the prescribed position to a distance corresponding to a product between the interval of imaging line and the number of imaging lines after the transfer distance of the line sensor 30 is made equal to the interval of imaging lines, and the line sensor 30 reads the document 11 in respective imaging lines simultaneously each time when being transferred by the subscanning means.
