A heat exchanger has a base which consists of a series of welded pipes in grid array. The welding process employed is electron beam welding or laser beam welding. The sheet metal grid (3) is push-fitted into receiving apertures in the tubular frame floor (1) using anchor bolts (2). The tabs are butt-welded to the floor outer side.
