PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the information of the capacity of an ink cartridge, and the like, appropriately. SOLUTION: An information detecting section 81 and a residual quantity of ink detecting section 82 provided in an ink cartridge 2 are scanned by means of a reflective photosensor 19. Residual quantity of ink is then detected based on the reflection state of each section and a detection is made whether the capacity of the ink cartridge is ordinary or high. The information detecting section 81 and the residual quantity of ink detecting section 82 are arranged such that the residual quantity of ink detecting section 82 exists on the side where the angle between an incident light from the photosensor 19 and the optical axis is acuteθ1 and the information detecting section 81 exists on the side where that angle is obtuseθ2. When the residual quantity of ink detecting section 82 is scanned, noise resulting from reflection or diffraction of light at the information detecting section 81 is suppressed and detection accuracy can be enhanced.
