PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper carrying device capable of easily and effectively suppressing load fluctuation of a paper sheet at a low cost. SOLUTION: Carrying force is imparted by holding a document between a rotated and driven resist roller 13 and a resist roller 14 driven and rotated in pressure contact with the resist roller 13. A nip release position 161 in relation to a resist roller 13a of a center side resist roller 14a disposed at a center side of a width direction orthogonal to a document carrying direction and a nip release position 161 in relation to a resist roller 13b of an outside resist roller 14b disposed at the outside of the width direction are set at different positions.
