PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a functional mat which is thick and light and can improve functions such as a heat-insulating property. SOLUTION: This functional mat 11 is formed by laminating a pair of upper fibers 11a and lower fibers 11b composed of the blended fibers of polyester fibers with kenaf fibers and compressing the obtained laminate to give a thickness of about 10 cm. Silica gel 12 having a water-absorbing or releasing property and an organic solvent-adsorbing property is contained in both the upper fibers 11a and the lower fibers 11b excluding both the surface layers in the central portion of the functional mat 11. The silica gel 12 and the kenaf fibers are nipped between the thermally fusible polyester fibers, and the functional mat 11 is used as a heat-insulating material for building wall materials.
