In an apparatus for stacking objects 11 on a pallet 17 so as to form a stack having squaredup sides, and comprising a pusher 2 for pushing objects 11 off a conveyer 1 and on to a carrier situated above the pallet 17, the carrier comprises two plates 3, 4 adapted to be moved apart so that stops A, S strip the objects 11 therefrom, and the pallet 17 is supported on a device 6 which lowers the pallet after each layer of objects has been placed thereon. As a result of the carrier plates being moved apart a gap is formed in each layer, the position of this gap depending on whether the carrier plates are of equal or unequal size. The carrier plates 3, 4 are mounted on guide rails 36 and are respectively connected to the upper and lower reaches of oscillatable endless chains 40. The direction of movement of the carrier plates 3, 4 may be transverse or parallel to the conveyer 1. The pusher 2 is pivotally carried by slides 14, 15 received in guides 17, 18 and connected to further guides 21, 22 which slidably receive driving elements 21, 22 attached to driven endless chains 23, 24. During reverse movement of the pusher 2 a roller 33 thereon engages a pivotal tongue 35 and is guided on to a cam track 34 thus lifting the pusher 2. The stop A is constituted by the pusher 2 which is held in a predetermined position for this purpose.
