It is intended to provide a differentiation inhibitor which makes it possible to culture stem cells or embryonic stem cells in the undifferentiated state without using feeder cells; a culture method using the same; a liquid culture medium using the same; and cells having been cultured and constructed by using the differentiation inhibitor. Namely, a stem cell differentiation inhibitor comprising as the active ingredient a low-molecular weight compound, in particular, a tetrahydroisoquinoline derivative; a method of safely culturing stem cells in the undifferentiated state on a large scale in the absence of feeder cells which comprises culturing the stem cells by using a tetrahydroisoquinoline derivative; a liquid culture medium for stem cells containing a tetrahydroisoquinoline derivative; and cells having been cultured and constructed by using a tetrahydroisoquinoline derivative as a differentiation inhibitor.
