PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a plurality of files with the same designation from being present by generating specific file names which are not overlapped, as long as picture data are recorded by the same image pickup device, and to reduce the time necessary for a file search by storing files while automatically sorting and classifying them in a directory, in a system for file-managing the picture data of an electronic camera. SOLUTION: A counter is recorded for updating a numerical value each time an image is recorded within the electronic camera. At such a time, each set of 50 pieces of image data is stored while being sorted in the directory. A directory name in such a case is derived on the basis of the numerical value of the counter. Besides, when the electronic camera is connected to a computer, a storage device in the electronic camera is examined from a host application of the computer and when a directory with a directory name including numerical values exceeding a certain constant value is found, all files with automatically generated file names are transferred to the computer, and the contents in the storage device are then changed.
