PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating type magnetic recording medium of a multilayered structure excellent in all of the surface smoothness, strength, magnetic characteristics, weather resistance, or the like. SOLUTION: The coating type magnetic recording medium of the multilayered structure is formed by forming a magnetic layer formed by dispersing magnetic powder in a resin based binder on a substrate via a non-magnetic layer formed by dispersing non-magnetic powder in a resin based binder. The magnetic powder consists of acicular ferromagnetic metal powder containing >5at.% and≤50at.% Co, 0.1 to 30at.% Al, 0.1 to 10at.% rare earth element (including Y),≤0.05wt.% group Ia element in the periodic table and≤0.1wt.% (including 0wt.%) group IIa element in the periodic table in Fe. The non-magnetic powder consists of an acicular iron oxyhydroxide having 0.01 to 0.5μm average major axis length and≤2wt.% quantity of H<SB>2</SB>O discharged at 100°C and branched with deflection in a prescribed two-dimensional direction.
