PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tag information reading method and device that senses information on a tag formed with magnetostrictive elements attached to paper or a medium other than the paper, near and away from the tag, thereby not only sensing one-bit information on existence not of the magnetostrictive elements but also sensing multiple bit information. SOLUTION: A varying alternating field of a specific frequency is intermittently applied to the tag formed of the plurality of magnetostrictive elements attached to a medium. Magnetostrictive residual vibration which occurs in the magnetostrictive elements after the stop of the alternating field is detected.
