PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a propionic ester derivative from a substituted vinyl compound simply in good yields. SOLUTION: The method for producing propionic ester derivatives represented by formula (4) and/or formula (5) comprises reacting an ethylene derivative represented by formula (1) with an alcohol represented by formula (3) and carbon monoxide in the presence of a group 8 metal compound, a nonhalogen catalyst, and a phosphorus compound represented by formula (2). In formulae (1), (2), and (3), R<SP>1</SP>is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, or the like; X is an optionally substituted alkylcarbonyloxy or aryl group or the like; R<SP>2</SP>is an alkyl group, an aryl group, or the like; R<SP>a</SP>is an optionally substituted alkanediyl or aryldialkyl group; and R<SP>3</SP>is an alkyl group or the like.
