PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress occurrence of a lighter black phenomenon while maintaining high contrast of a liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device, a backlight 12 is constructed as a multilayer structure and turning on and turning off of every layer are controlled by a control part 62. In this case, the backlight is controlled by detecting brightness of surroundings of the liquid crystal display device with a photosensor 63, judging an output level of the photosensor with a discrimination part 64 and determining whether each of the layer of the backlight is to be individually turned on or turned off so as to lower illuminance of the backlight 12 in the case the surroundings of the display device is dark or to heighten the illuminance of the backlight 12 in the case the surroundings of the display device is bright. Also in the construction, color temperature control parts 91a, 91b are installed so as to adjust the color temperature of light emitted from the backlight 12. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
