PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator for a sign which accumulates the electric energy converted by a solar cell during sunshine into a storage battery and makes a light source emit light by utilizing the electric energy and does not therefore require the supply of a commercial power source and exchange of batteries, is excellent in energy saving and maintenance properties, is easily mountable onto the existing sign, has excellent versatility, is bright in illumination, and is excellent in attractiveness and visibility of an advertisement display surface. SOLUTION: The lighting system is equipped with an illuminating section 5 which has a light emitting diode serving as a light source in it, a power source section which is disposed in the outer peripheral part of the illuminating section and is equipped with a solar cell panel 7 and the storage battery for supplying electric power to the illuminating section, an optical sensor 8 which detects ambient illuminance and controls the supply of the electric power to the illuminating section and/or a timer which controls the supply of the electric power to the illuminating section according to the set working time and a locking section 3 which retains the illuminating section.
