Liquid crystal medium based on a mixture of polar compounds with positive or negative dielectric anisotropy comprises one or more 2-fluoro-1,4-diphenylbenzene derivatives (I). Liquid crystal medium based on a mixture of polar compounds with positive or negative dielectric anisotropy comprises one or more 2-fluoro-1,4-diphenylbenzene derivatives of formula (I): [Image] R 1>, R 2>H or 1-12C alkyl, where alkyl is optionally monosubstituted with CN or CF 3or mono- or poly-substituted with halogen and optionally has one or more CH 2groups replaced by O, S, 1,3-cyclobutylene, CH=CH, ethynylene, CO, COO, OCO or OCOO. An independent claim is also included for electrooptic display devices comprising a liquid crystal medium as above.
