<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a manufacturing time of an optical fluoride crystal and to increase a throughput of a furnace about each manufacturing step in a method for manufacturing the optical fluoride crystal. <P>SOLUTION: A powdery fluoride feedstock 214 is packed in a flexible mold 212. The fluoride feedstock 214 is compacted by applying isostatic pressure to the mold 212. The compacted fluoride feedstock is packed in a crucible. Crystal is grown by melting the compacted fluoride feedstock in the crucible and moving the crucible through temperature gradient. A powdery fluorination agent is mixed as required with the fluoride feedstock 214 before applying the isostatic pressure to the mold. The main object of the isostatic compacting is to increase a bulk density of the powdery fluoride before practical crystal growth. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
