PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direction discrimination device for discriminating surely the direction of a variable pitch spring. SOLUTION: This direction discrimination device of the variable pitch spring is equipped with an imaging means for imaging from the axial direction, an end turn face on either side of the variable pitch spring wherein a coarsely wound part is formed on one end side and a close wound part is formed on the other end side, an extraction means for extracting the terminal part of the variable pitch spring from the imaged end turn face, and an operation means for comparing the extracted terminal part shape with a normal terminal part shape of the coarsely wound part or the close wound part and operating the correlation degree between both shapes. The device is characterized by discriminating the direction of the variable pitch spring based on the operation result by the operation means. Hereby, even if the pitch difference between the close wound part and the coarsely wound part of the variable pitch spring is small or a pitch interval has dispersion, the direction can be surely discriminated.
