The monitoring unit comprises a generator (G) for charging a battery (30) which supplies power to the onboard network. A unit (20) is provided for monitoring charging balance of the battery. The generator (G) is connected to a drive unit (H) which is controlled by the balance monitoring unit (20) to set rotations of the generator. The monitoring unit (20) has two sensors: one (21) for determining total power consumption of the onboard network and another (22) for determining actual power output of the generator. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating the monitoring unit.
