PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive and easily controllable controller of a slack-reducing device, not requiring high-grade controlling function, and capable of continuously carrying out the control even if a distance between the measuring position of a distance-measuring means and a material-sending means is long. SOLUTION: This controller of the slack-reducing device detects the height (the position of the surface) of a belt-shaped material by the distance-measuring means, and maintains the height of the material within a prescribed height range by accelerating or decelerating the traveling speed of the material. The controller has a measure-indicating part for outputting a measure-indicating signal to the distance-measuring means at a measuring interval which is sufficiently rapid compared to the traveling speed of the material to obtain many measured values within a traveling time required for traveling from the measuring position of the distance-measuring means to the material-sending means, and an acceleration and deceleration-indicating part for treating the many measured values and outputting an accelerating or decelerating signal for accelerating or decelerating the traveling speed of the material to the material-sending means.
