PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform display of a moving picture and large-capacity display with many scanning lines which are hardly realized before by making fast the response speed of TN and STN type nematic liquid crystal which are used so far, namely, to provide a driving method for nematic liquid crystal whose response speed is fast. SOLUTION: In this driving method for the nematic liquid crystal, a liquid crystal display element 14 composed of nematic liquid crystal is driven and not driven by color frames of R, G, and B constituting one video color composite frame according to gradations in a liquid crystal display 1 equipped with the liquid crystal display element 14 and a back light 2 having light sources of three colors R, G, and B composed of an R tube 22, a G tube 23, and a B tube 24, and light sources of a corresponding color among the R tube 22, G tube 23, and B tube 24 are turned on in order synchronously with color frames to perform desired gradation display by the color frames.
